It would be repeating only the platitudinal and obvious to begin pontificating on how
much more of a globalized world we live in today than 30 years ago (or just 20 or even 10, for that matter). So let us not stumble down that route. Ever since East German citizens began leaving their Trabants by the Lake Balaton in Hungary to trickle over into the Federal Republic of Germany by way of Austria and a hearty meal between President George H. W. Bush and General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev aboard the Maksim Gorkiy saw the two declare an end to the Cold War, the world of commerce, communication, travel, culture—and the list could easily go on—has become increasingly interconnected between nations and oblivious to distances. Alongside these many blessings, however, the question of accountability and justice in this globalized society has only become more pressing. It is upon this question that our cover topic will focus for our current volume.
